Shilajit Resin vs Capsules: Which Should You Buy?
Resin or capsules? It's one of the most common questions about shilajit, and it's an easy one to get stuck on when you're about to buy.
Here's the short answer. For everyday use, go for resin. It's the purest, most concentrated form of shilajit, it's the easiest to check, and it's about 50p a day. Capsules have their place, mainly for travel or if you want a specific blend. But they're the backup, not the main event.
If that's all you needed, here's our Himalayan shilajit resin. If you want the full picture, read on.
What's the difference between shilajit resin and capsules?
Resin is shilajit in its natural form, once it's been cleaned and dried. It's a thick, sticky, dark paste. You scoop out a pea-sized amount and stir it into a warm drink.
Capsules are shilajit that's been processed into a form that fits inside a capsule, usually as an extract, and often mixed with other ingredients. Ours are blends: shilajit with ashwagandha, or shilajit with lion's mane.
Same starting point. Very different end product.
Why resin is the one to start with
1. It's the purest form
Resin is as close as you can get to shilajit as it comes off the mountain. Nothing's been added. Our resin is just shilajit, harvested above 16,000ft in the Nepal Himalayas and sun dried. (The full story is in The Journey of Shilajit.)
2. It's the most concentrated form
A capsule has limited room, and in a blend that room is shared with other ingredients. With resin, a whole serving is shilajit. Our February 2026 batch tested at 73.8% fulvic acid and 88.5% total humic substances. See the Lab Results page or the full certificate (PDF).
3. You can check it yourself
Real resin firms up when cold, softens when warm and dissolves completely in warm water. You can't do any of that with a capsule. You just have to trust what's inside. We explain all the checks in How to Spot Fake Shilajit.
4. It's good value per day
A 30g jar of resin holds about 60 servings. That's about 50p a day for a single jar, and down to about 33p a day on the 4 jar bundle. The full breakdown is in How Long Does a Jar of Shilajit Resin Last?
5. You control the amount
With resin, you can start smaller and build up to a full pea-sized serving. With capsules, you get what's in the capsule.
When capsules make sense
Capsules aren't bad. They're just for specific situations. Here's when we'd suggest them:
- Travelling. No kettle, no mug, no sticky spoon in your washbag. Capsules are much easier on holiday or a work trip.
- Days away from home. At the gym, at work or out all day, a capsule is quicker than finding a warm drink.
- You want a specific blend. Our capsules pair shilajit with another ingredient. Ashwagandha and Shilajit or Lion's Mane and Shilajit, if that combination is what you're after.
- You really can't get on with the taste. Resin tastes earthy and a bit bitter. Lots of people get used to it, especially in coffee or warm milk with honey, but if you can't, capsules are an option.
One easy option: keep resin as your everyday choice at home, and a pot of capsules in your bag for when you're away.

What about liquid shilajit?
Liquid shilajit is resin that's already been dissolved. It sits somewhere in between: no measuring and no stirring, but you still get the shilajit taste. If you like the idea of resin but don't want to scoop, our liquid dropper is worth a look.
How to take resin if you've never tried it
It's easier than it looks:
- Use a small spoon to scoop out a pea-sized amount, about 500mg.
- Drop it into a mug with a bit of warm water, tea or coffee. Warm, not boiling.
- Stir until it's fully dissolved, top up and drink.
That's it. For seven easy ways to have it, including in coffee and smoothies, see How to Incorporate Shilajit into Your Daily Routine.
FAQ
Is shilajit resin better than capsules?
For everyday use, yes. Resin is the purest, most concentrated form, you can check it at home and it's about 50p a day. Capsules are handy for travel or if you want a specific blend.
Can I take resin and capsules together?
Some people use resin at home and capsules when they're away. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, check with your GP first. The same goes if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18.
Can I take shilajit resin on holiday?
You can, but a sticky jar in a suitcase isn't for everyone. Capsules are the easier option for travel.
Does resin taste bad?
It's earthy, a bit smoky and a bit bitter. In coffee, hot chocolate or warm milk with honey you'll barely notice it.
How long does a jar of resin last?
A 30g jar holds about 60 servings, so roughly two months at one a day.
